Neve Sha'anan Sports Center

A place to connect
Project Overview
Situated between a school and a kindergarten, this sports center aims to connect between the age-diverse population of the neighborhood. It includes a shallow wading pool, a sports shop, balconies for yoga classes, meeting rooms, a coffee shop and a basketball court. The surrounding area is kept in its’ natural forested state, preserving the qualities of the park that was there before.

This is a project I did in my 3rd year in the bachelor's degree in architecture in the Technion under the tutelage of Arch. Nir Chen.

Originally a park with a hiking trail, we were tasked with planning a sports center situated between a school and a kindergarten that would service the students as well as other members of the local community. There were no restrictions on what the sports center would provide, other than it needing to have a basketball court.

My sports center features 4 floors, with the bottom one containing a pool, sauna areas, a shop and the main entrance from the street. Above it is a viewing balcony intended for the visitors' escorts, such as parents and assistants. The third floor, which is also the entrance floor from the school, features rooms and balconies for small group lessons in dancing, yoga and more, as well as a coffee shop. In order to avoid putting too much weight on the basketball court it is situated on the top floor.

The sports center is a place for members of the community of all ages and is meant to serve as a sort of social hub as well. The outside area maintains a certain wilderness and invites people to spend more time outdoors, shaded by the trees.
